About Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling

For centuries, backhold wrestling has captivated wrestlers and spectators alike. This form of wrestling, with its simple rules and blend of speed, strength, agility, skill, and determination, is a staple at sports meetings and agricultural shows throughout the Northern Counties of England and the Borders of Scotland.
Cumberland and Westmorland Style wrestling has endured as a skilled and vigorous sport, documented extensively over the past two centuries by newspapers, specialised books, and now on social media and websites. Despite the passage of time, the core elements of the sport remain unchanged. If a wrestler from today’s rings could travel back two hundred years, they would find the same ‘chips’ (techniques) used, many of the same technical terms (like buttocks, hipes, and dog falls), and similar judging challenges, such as ensuring equal holds at the start.

Why Wrestling is Important to Eskdale

Wrestling holds a significant place in the traditions of Eskdale, reflecting the community’s enduring love for this historic sport. It is a highlight of the show, drawing competitors and spectators who appreciate the display of skill, tradition, and competitive spirit.

Key Rules

Each match consists of 3 falls; the best of 3 is the winner.
The loser of each fall is the competitor who breaks the hold first or touches the ground with any part of their body other than their feet.
If both competitors fall, the winner is the one who touches the ground last.
If the umpire cannot determine which competitor touched the ground last, it is declared a “dog fall,” and the fall is restarted.
